2026 State of Digital & Beyond:
The Restaurant Technology Benchmark

The Year of Serving Smarter

QSR and Fast Casual brands enter 2026 in a more disciplined operating environment. Traffic remains uneven, labor constraints persist, and margins continue to tighten.

The industry has moved from experimentation to execution, defined by operational stability, intelligent decision-making, and a unified guest experience. Brands are focused on optimizing new channels while closing operational gaps.

This year’s survey examines how restaurant leaders are navigating that shift, and where they are investing to improve performance, resilience, and margin control.

Seven Years. Seven Charities.

In honor of our seventh annual industry report, we donated to seven charities supporting causes important to our restaurant participants.

“To effectively address the challenges surfaced in our 2026 report, restaurants need intelligent systems built on unified data. Without that foundation, AI becomes another tool layered onto disconnected systems rather than a true growth engine.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is unified commerce for restaurants?

Unified commerce connects every ordering channel — in-store, drive-thru, kiosk, first-party digital, and third-party marketplaces — to one platform and one data set, so menus, pricing, and orders stay consistent everywhere. 17% of brands name it a top 2026 investment, up from 14%.

Where are restaurants getting value from AI today?

Mostly in marketing and analytics rather than in the kitchen. AI spend concentrates in marketing, CRM and personalization at 53%, predictive analytics at 40%, and voice ordering at 39%. Kitchen automation and AI ordering agents trail at 23% each.

What are restaurants doing to protect margins in 2026?

Demand stimulation comes first. Brands ranked promotions and discounts as the most effective strategy for improving revenue and margins, followed by new menu items and limited-time offers, then marketing campaigns. Operational improvements that reduce cost or improve throughput ranked fifth.

Which restaurant segment is adopting technology faster, QSR or fast casual?

QSRs are moving faster on both fronts. 54% of QSRs plan to increase technology spending versus 44% of fast casual brands, and 56% of QSRs are actively investing in AI versus 45% of fast casual.
